The First Reproductive Laboratory Accredited by CAP in Asia

The laboratory of the Center of Reproductive Medicine at Changhua Christian Hospital (hereinafter referred to as CCH) has been Accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in 2010 and has become the first reproductive laboratory certified by CAP in Asia. As of 2019, it was still the only reproductive laboratory accredited by CAP in Asia. CAP is the most credible accreditation authority of clinical laboratories in the world. The authority has set up strict requirements for the operating procedures, quality control, and examination technology of the laboratory. The certification process contains documentary reviews of more than 500 provisions and on-site inspections of the laboratory environment by the international accreditation committee. Once certified, reevaluation will be required every two years. So far, the Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH has achieved accreditation 5 consecutive times, keeping the quality of the laboratory equal to the world’s highest standard.

The WELL Certification at the Gold level

In order to improve medical quality and to offer a more comfortable working environment for the staff,CCH has spent tens of millions of NTD to build a people-centered non-toxic environment for the body, mind, and soul. The new building has been awarded the WELL Certification at the Gold level in 2020. The International WELL Building Standard is the first standard established according to the effect of architectural environments on human health. To receive a Gold level certification, a building must firstly meet the seven WELL criteria: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind, which include 105 indicators. Therefore, from volatile organic compounds or PM 2.5 in the air, and bacterial or heavy metal content in water, to environmental illuminance and noise level, everything in the Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH has all been sampled, examined, and approved by the international accreditation committee. So, the next time you visit the Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH, remember to take off your mask for some fresh air!

The Department of Genetic Medicine

The Department of Genetic Medicine at CCH is second to none. It has served as the strong support for the Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH and has benefitted many couples suffering from hereditary diseases. The department has facilitated the completion of the genetic diagnoses before the embryo transfer in order to give birth to healthy babies. Following the Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey in the US, the Department of Genetic Medicine at CCH has been the only facility in the world which has developed the challenging technology of “qPCR embryo fast screening.” The technology has been patented in the US and Taiwan, which not only costs less, but also enables rapid screening for healthy embryos. In addition, the Department of Genetic Medicine at CCH is the only laboratory capable of examining single gene disorders and the only laboratory which acquires the patent right of the “Non-invasive prenatal screening” technology in Taiwan.

Dedicated Independent Space

Due to the particularity of infertility patients, the Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH has specifically set up a dedicated independent space outside the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to separate infertility patients from ordinary pregnant women and gynecology patients. The Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH provides an independent and comfortable waiting area, one-to-one consultation, and one-to-one injection teaching session. We do not just pay attention to patient privacy, but emphasize on the detailed explanation of treatment procedures.

Integrated Therapy Services

Infertility treatment often involves many aspects, such as microdissection testicular sperm extraction by urology, genetic counseling by the Department of Genetic Medicine, psychological consultation by the Department of Psychiatry, and surgical treatments of infertility by the Department of Gynecology. CCH is the oldest medical center and the largest medical system located in central Taiwan, which offers integrated therapy services with an interdisciplinary team approach and lowers the complexity of referral procedures to eliminate the interhospital trips for patients.

Continuing Care Services

The risks of pregnancy complications and premature delivery for IVF pregnancy are higher than ordinary pregnancy. Although being pregnant is the first step to success, what matters most is the viable birth of a new life. The Center of Reproductive Medicine at CCH offers outstanding continuing care services after pregnancy. CCH is also a high-risk pregnancy responsible hospital approved by the Department of Health, so our expert physicians are responsible for high-level ultrasound scans, chorionic villus sampling, umbilical cord blood sampling, amniocentesis, and intrauterinefetal therapy, etc. Furthermore, the Department of Neonatology at CCH is the evacuation and referral center for newborns in central Taiwan, which collaborates with the Department of Obstetrics in providing comprehensive care to high-risk pregnant mothers and neonates. Such services include extremely premature infant care, congenital anomalies, postnatal care, etc. In fact, CCH had successfully rescued an extremely premature baby with a birth weight of only 339 grams in 2015, breaking a record for lightest surviving premature birth in the whole country.
